Last year in Canada, we provoked just such high level lay oversight of scientific RF regulatory authority. Not much was to be expected of this political forum (House of Commons Standing Committee on Health), but their report was lamer even than those low expectations, considering the fine testimony, even under constrained circumstances, of the scientific & lay witnesses we assembled to testify, and the pile of written submissions in condemnation of the status quo. Under scrutiny was the federal Dept. of "Health", yet out of many witnesses giving their status quo end of it, there was but a single witness from that Dept. itself, the rest industry-connected hacks or hirelings. However, and the reason it comes to mind to make a post like this just now, at first a scientific line-up of some eminence we were told was going to speak for the status quo. But once we set our own witnesses, the bigger guns disappeared. Why go head to head using your best and risk looking bad comparatively?

In the regnant culture, where scientism effectively acts as religious surrogate, it is very rare indeed to find empowered disinterested laypeople to act as judges where scientific study is at issue. Deference to a priesthood, in our world of dangerous overspecialization, is almost invariable. Rare indeed again to find the required brave capable generalists.
